About Bigroot Geranium

Bigroot geranium is a rhizomatous, semi-evergreen perennial valued for aromatic leaves, spring flowers and dependable groundcover. Its mature height and spread vary with conditions, but it forms a spreading mat that can knit together border edges and lightly shaded areas. [Missouri Botanical Garden](https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?=&chr=3&compcolor=FFFFFF&compp=0&isprofile=0&ss=8&taxonid=280850) and [Cornell Cooperative Extension](https://s3.amazonaws.com/assets.cce.cornell.edu/attachments/1981/Roadside-Vegetation-Handbook-Part-1.pdf?1408469028=). ## Foliage and flowers Rounded, lobed leaves release a noticeable scent when brushed or crushed and often take on red or orange tones in fall. In late spring to early summer, loose clusters of pink, purple-pink or creamy-white flowers rise above the foliage; color can vary among plants. The rhizomes help the plant fill space and suppress weeds over time. ## Site and planting Grow in full sun to shade, adjusting exposure to local heat: partial shade is useful in hot summers. Average, humus-rich soil that drains well suits it; the species tolerates dry conditions once established. Allow the rhizomes to spread or use edging where a defined border is needed. [SDSU Extension](https://extension.sdstate.edu/perennial-ground-covers-sunny-gardens) also notes its strong spreading habit and early-summer bloom. ## Maintenance Remove faded flower stalks if a tidier look is wanted and trim damaged leaves as needed. Divide established clumps in spring to move or reduce them; routine pruning is usually unnecessary.
