About Bevans Hardy Geranium

Bevan's Hardy Geranium is the named selection Geranium macrorrhizum 'Bevan's Variety', a spreading bigroot geranium with aromatic foliage and deep magenta-purple flowers framed by dark red sepals. It makes a useful, low groundcover for a border or beneath shrubs, with leaves that can color in fall. [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/93462/geranium-macrorrhizum-bevans-variety/details) and [Johnson's Nursery profile](https://kb.jniplants.com/bevans-geranium-macrorrhizum). ## Garden use and season The rounded, gray-green leaves form a dense mat and release a strong scent when brushed. Flowers usually appear from late spring into summer; individual profiles give different bloom spans and mature dimensions, so use the local planting conditions and available space when deciding how closely to place it. Rhizomes help it knit into a groundcover and suppress weeds. ## Site and planting Choose full sun for the strongest flower display and fall color, or partial shade beneath established shrubs. Well-drained soil is important; avoid planting the crown too deeply. It tolerates dry periods once rooted, though new plants need regular moisture. The [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/93462/geranium-macrorrhizum-bevans-variety/details) includes full shade among its accepted positions. ## Maintenance Remove flowered stems or lightly shear after bloom if the foliage becomes untidy. Divide clumps in spring when they need moving or containment. Deer and rabbits usually leave the aromatic foliage alone, according to [Johnson's Nursery](https://kb.jniplants.com/bevans-geranium-macrorrhizum).
