About Espresso Hardy Geranium

Espresso is correctly identified as Geranium maculatum 'Espresso', a woodland cranesbill selected for deeply lobed chocolate-bronze foliage and pale pink to lavender spring flowers. It forms a compact clump suited to shaded borders and woodland gardens, with exact mature dimensions varying among references. [Native Plant Trust](https://plantfinder.nativeplanttrust.org/plant/Geranium-maculatum-Espresso) and [Perennials.com](https://www.perennials.com/plants/geranium-maculatum-espresso.html). ## Foliage and flowering The dark leaves provide contrast through the growing season, while saucer-shaped flowers open in mid to late spring. In favorable conditions, a light summer rebloom may follow trimming, though flowering is usually strongest in spring. The plant is a named selection of the eastern North American species G. maculatum. ## Site and planting Plant in full sun or partial shade in average to moist, well-drained soil; woodland edges and the front of a border suit its clumping habit. Some drought is tolerated after establishment, but keeping soil from becoming very dry helps the foliage remain attractive. Allow roughly 1–2 feet for the clump, recognizing that published spreads range somewhat wider. ## Maintenance Remove faded flowering stems or tired leaves for a neat appearance. If summer foliage declines, a light cutback can refresh the plant. Divide clumps in early spring or fall when you need to propagate or relocate them.
