About Ingwersen's Variety Hardy Geranium

Geranium macrorrhizum ‘Ingwersen’s Variety’ is a spreading hardy geranium with soft pink flowers and aromatic, lobed leaves. It flowers from late spring into summer, while the foliage can turn orange-red in autumn ([RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/97812/geranium-macrorrhizum-ingwersen-s-variety/details/); [KPU Plant Database](https://plantdatabase.kpu.ca/Plant/gema)). ## Garden use Use this cultivar as a low groundcover beneath shrubs, along a border edge, or in dry shade where many flowering perennials struggle. Its rhizomes knit plants into a spreading mat, and crushed leaves release a noticeable fragrance. It also works in sunnier beds when the soil drains well. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun to shade in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Established plants tolerate dry shade, but water new plantings during dry weather. Published size estimates vary: the RHS lists 10–50 cm tall and 50–100 cm wide, while KPU lists 20–40 cm tall and 30–60 cm wide, so allow room for a spreading patch rather than relying on one precise width. ## Seasonal interest Pale pink flowers rise above rounded foliage in late spring and early summer. Semi-evergreen leaves may persist into winter and often color orange or red in fall. ## Maintenance Remove spent flower stems and old leaves to refresh the clump. Divide in spring if the patch needs thinning or propagation; avoid waterlogged soil.
