About Orion Hardy Geranium

Geranium ‘Orion’ is a mound-forming hardy geranium with large violet-blue flowers marked by fine dark red veins and a white center. It flowers profusely in summer, and the RHS trial recorded plants about 1 m tall and 2 m wide ([RHS trial](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/pdfs/plant-trials-and-awards/plant-bulletins/geranium-stage-1.pdf); [RHS plant profile](https://rhs.crocdn.co.uk/plants/_/geranium-orion/classid.2000012401/)). ## Garden use Give this vigorous cultivar room in a sunny border or use it to cover ground among larger perennials. Its broad mound and high flower display make it a strong seasonal feature; the spreading stems can fill gaps as the plant establishes. ## Growing conditions Prepare the planting area with organic matter and water well during dry spells, especially while the plant is becoming established. A light compost mulch helps conserve moisture. The RHS recommends deadheading to encourage continued flowering and a light trim if the plant becomes untidy later in the season. ## Seasonal interest The clearest display comes in summer, when violet-blue flowers with a pale center rise over divided green foliage. The long flowering habit suits mixed borders where a large blue-toned drift is useful. ## Maintenance Deadhead spent blooms during the flowering season. After the main display, trim lightly if stems sprawl or look tired, then leave the plant to regrow.
