About Avens (Geum)

Geums, commonly called avens, are rhizomatous herbaceous perennials in the rose family. Their basal leaves and open, saucer-shaped flowers make them useful for adding color and light movement through the late spring and summer garden. ## Growing Conditions Most border geums prefer an open sunny position and fertile soil that holds moisture without staying waterlogged. The genus also includes alpine plants for freely draining sites and damp habitat species, so match care to the species or cultivar rather than assuming one condition suits all. The [RHS growing guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/geum/growing-guide) notes that many garden forms flower from late spring into summer, with some continuing into autumn. ## Garden Use Species and cultivars vary in size, color, and flower form. Many fit near the front of a border, where their wiry flowering stems can rise above lower foliage; smaller selections also suit containers and rock gardens. Check the mature dimensions and site needs of the named plant before spacing it. ## Maintenance Water during dry spells while plants establish. Remove faded flower stems to encourage further bloom. Older clumps can lose vigor or die out in the center; divide healthy leafy rosettes every few years and replant them. See the [RHS care guidance](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/geum/growing-guide) for planting, watering, deadheading, and division.
