About Red Dragon Avens

Red Dragon is a clump-forming Chilean avens with low mounds of divided green leaves and double scarlet flowers on wiry, branched stems. Its late-spring and summer bloom brings bright color to borders and containers. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun or light shade in fertile, well-drained soil. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/228312/geum-chiloense-red-dragon/details) describes scarlet double flowers up to 4 cm across and growth to about 50 cm tall. [Takii](https://takii.eu/products/geum-chil-red-dragon/) identifies the selection as Geum chiloense ‘Red Dragon’, with scarlet double blooms and a 60 cm height listing. Allow roughly 12–20 inches for flowering stems, and keep soil from becoming waterlogged. ## Garden Use Use Red Dragon at the front or middle of a mixed border, in a patio container, or where its long stems can be cut for arrangements. Its vivid flowers contrast with green foliage and pair well with grasses and lower edging plants. ## Maintenance Water during dry spells as plants establish. Deadhead faded flowers to encourage additional buds, then divide mature clumps every few years to maintain vigor. The [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/228312/geum-chiloense-red-dragon/details) recommends deadheading and division; [Takii](https://takii.eu/products/geum-chil-red-dragon/) lists cut-flower, landscaping, and patio uses.
