About Fire Storm Avens

Geum ‘Fire Storm’ is a compact avens selected for its vivid orange, ruffled flowers above a low mound of green leaves. Its first flush arrives in spring and early summer, with occasional later flowers extending the display. ## Season and form This named hybrid has a compact, upright to mounding habit. The plant patent describes orange blooms with warmer orange-red edges and flowering from April through June, with sporadic rebloom into September. The [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/315333/geum-fire-storm/details) also describes a clump-forming plant with orange flowers from late spring to late summer. Allow roughly 12–14 inches for the foliage and flowering stems and about 16–18 inches of spread. ## Placement and care Place it in sun for the strongest flowering; it tolerates light shade. Fertile, well-drained soil suits it, and winter waterlogging should be avoided. Use it near the front or middle of a mixed border, in a patio container, or as a small cut-flower accent. The [cultivar patent](https://patents.justia.com/patent/PP23179) documents the selection’s color, compact form, and flowering period. ## Maintenance Deadhead finished flowers to encourage additional bloom. Divide established clumps every few years in spring or autumn if flowering or vigor declines.
