Ginkgo is a long-lived, deciduous tree with distinctive fan-shaped leaves that turn clear yellow in fall. It is adaptable to urban settings and has a slow-to-moderate growth rate, eventually forming a substantial canopy. The [Missouri Botanical Garden](https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?chr=15&isprofile=0&pt=14&taxonid=280988&z=6) lists a mature height of 50–80 feet, spread of 30–40 feet, and hardiness in zones 3–8.
## Landscape Use
Use ginkgo as a shade or street tree where there is room for its mature width. The species has separate male and female trees; female trees produce fleshy seeds with a strong odor, so choose a known male selection for sites near walks and patios. Male cultivars are commonly planted where seed cleanup would be unwelcome.
## Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Ginkgo tolerates a range of urban soils, heat, air pollution, and some dry conditions once established. Water new trees during establishment and prolonged drought. The [Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/ginkgo/) notes its durability, fall color, and low routine maintenance.
## Maintenance
Prune in spring to remove damaged branches or correct structural problems. Leave the crown largely natural; the species develops a broad outline with age.
