Mariken is a dwarf, slow-growing ginkgo with a low, spreading crown and somewhat pendulous branches. Its small fan-shaped leaves are green in summer and turn golden yellow in fall. The cultivar is a male clone, and it is commonly grafted to a standard when a raised canopy is desired.
## Garden Use and Size
Oregon State University describes Mariken at about 2 feet high and wide after 10 years, with an eventual form near 3 feet tall by 8 feet wide. Other horticultural accounts give a taller mature height, so allow room for a broad, low crown and treat size estimates as approximate. It suits a small lawn, courtyard, or large container where its unusual form can be appreciated.
## Site and Seasonal Interest
Plant in full sun or light shade in well-drained soil. The green, fan-shaped leaves provide fine texture, then turn golden yellow in autumn. Oregon State University lists it as hardy to USDA Zone 4 and records the cultivar's low-spreading, pendulous habit. ## Maintenance
Water regularly during establishment and during extended dry spells. Pruning is rarely needed; remove dead or crossing branches while retaining the naturally spreading outline. Clear fallen leaves from paths when they become slippery.
