Crown daisy

Crown daisy is an upright, branching annual grown for both its leafy shoots and daisy-like flowers. The aromatic leaves are used as a cooked green in many Asian cuisines, while white or yellow flower heads bring a light, informal display in spring and summer. ## Garden use Grow it in an edible border or vegetable bed, or leave selected plants to flower among other annuals. Plants commonly reach about 1–3 feet tall; width is variable and depends on cultivar and spacing. Sow successively for a longer harvest, and thin seedlings so flowering plants have room to branch. ## Growing conditions Full sun or partial shade and damp but well-drained, humus-rich soil suit this cool-season crop. It can be grown in spring and fall in warm climates; hot weather can make the leaves taste more bitter. Tender leaves may be eaten raw or cooked, and young shoots are commonly added to soups and stir-fries. The UF/IFAS guide reports harvest beginning about 40–45 days after sowing, with repeated cuts possible for broad-leaf forms. ## Maintenance Keep soil evenly moist while plants establish and harvest leaves regularly. Remove spent annual plants after flowering or allow a few to set seed if volunteer seedlings are welcome.
