About Variegated Creeping Charlie

Variegated creeping Charlie, also called variegated ground ivy, is a vigorous, mat-forming perennial with rounded scalloped leaves edged in cream and small lilac-mauve flowers in summer. Its trailing stems root as they spread, making it useful as a low ground cover or as a cascading foliage plant in a container. ## Garden use Use it at the edge of a container, hanging basket, or contained ground-cover planting where the variegated leaves can spill over a wall or rim. The RHS lists a mature spread of about 20–39 inches and a height range of roughly 4–20 inches; the catalog's height and spread points fall within those ranges. ## Growing conditions Grow in full sun or partial shade in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It tolerates clay, loam, sand, and chalk soils. Foliage may remain evergreen or become semi-evergreen depending on winter conditions. The cultivar is listed as Glechoma hederacea 'Variegata'; related nursery synonyms include Nepeta glechoma 'Variegata' and Nepeta hederacea 'Variegata'. ## Maintenance Trim excess growth as needed to keep stems within their allotted space. Divide in spring or autumn, or take softwood cuttings in late spring. [RHS cultivar profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/71551/glechoma-hederacea-variegata-v/details).
