About Northern Sentinel® Honeylocust

Northern Sentinel® is a narrow, upright honeylocust selected for street-tree plantings where a compact crown is useful. The breeder identifies it as Gleditsia triacanthos 'JFS GMorgenson1', with medium-green, fine-textured foliage that turns yellow in fall and sparse fruit. ## Garden use Use this cultivar as a vertical accent or street tree where a broad honeylocust canopy would take too much room. J. Frank Schmidt & Son lists mature dimensions near 45 feet tall by 25 feet wide and USDA hardiness zone 4. Its upright vase-to-oval form provides a clear trunk when trained for traffic clearance. ## Growing conditions The breeder describes the cultivar as a selection found in South Dakota and reports that the parent tree had not suffered observed ice or snow damage. The breeder does not claim that the cultivar is seedless under every growing condition, so allow for some fruit. Give it room to develop a mature crown and confirm local site, utility, and street-tree requirements before planting. ## Maintenance Establish a strong central structure when young and prune lower branches gradually where pedestrian or vehicle clearance is needed. Inspect after storms and remove damaged branches.
