About Skycole Skyline® Honeylocust

Skyline® is a thornless, broadly pyramidal honeylocust with ascending branches and a tidy central leader. Its fine green leaflets cast light shade, turn golden yellow in fall, and create relatively little leaf litter; [J. Frank Schmidt](https://jfschmidt.com/all-trees/trees/skyline-honeylocust/) identifies the selection as ‘Skycole’ and lists it at about 45 feet tall by 35 feet wide. ## Landscape Use Use Skyline® as a street, lawn, or park shade tree where an upright crown and clear trunk are useful. It is adapted to many urban conditions, but its full mature size calls for adequate space below wires and away from buildings. ## Size and Siting Allow about 45 feet of height and 35 feet of spread. Plant in full sun and a well-drained site; honeylocust tolerates a range of urban soil conditions once established. J. Frank Schmidt lists USDA Zone 4, and [The Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/thornless-honey-locust/) identifies Skyline as a male, fruitless selection with a pyramidal crown. ## Seasonal Interest Green compound leaves provide fine summer texture and filter sunlight. The canopy turns yellow to golden in fall, then the small leaflets tend to sift through turf or wash away with rain. The male cultivar is described as nearly seedless, reducing pod litter. ## Maintenance Give young trees regular water as they establish and protect the root zone with a shallow mulch layer. Preserve the central leader with selective pruning and remove lower branches gradually where clearance is needed; avoid unnecessary topping.
