Rattlesnake plant (Goeppertia insignis) is an evergreen tropical perennial grown mainly for its long, wavy leaves, dark green markings, and purple undersides. In most North American homes it is best treated as an indoor foliage plant, greenhouse specimen, or large terrarium plant.
## Light and Placement
Set the plant in bright shade or filtered light; avoid strong direct sun, drafts, and sudden temperature changes. [North Carolina Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/goeppertia-insignis/common-name/rattlesnake-calathea/) recommends warm indoor conditions and high humidity. The leaves fold in the evening and reopen in the morning, and their patterned surfaces provide interest through the year.
## Water and Growing Medium
Use a well-drained, peaty potting mix and keep it evenly moist during active spring and summer growth without leaving roots in standing water. Reduce watering in winter as growth slows. Humidity helps prevent curled or browned leaf edges; a humidified room or pebble tray can help, and wiping dust from the leaves keeps the foliage clean. The [Royal Horticultural Society](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/386634/goeppertia-insignis/details) likewise recommends filtered or indirect light, high humidity, and a steady warm temperature.
## Maintenance
Check the soil regularly so it does not dry completely or remain saturated. Watch for aphids, scale, mealybugs, and spider mites, and avoid wetting the leaves while watering. Outdoor flowers are small and uncommon indoors; the foliage remains the main ornamental feature.
