About 'Gold Child' Ivy

‘Gold Child’ is an evergreen English ivy with gray-green, three- to five-lobed leaves bordered by broad gold markings. It can trail as groundcover or climb, and the gold color may soften in hot weather or become less vivid in deep shade. ([Gardenia](https://www.gardenia.net/plant/hedera-helix-goldchild)) ## Landscape Use Grow it in a container, hanging basket, over a low wall, or on a support where the stems can be managed. A published selection profile gives a height of 1.5–3 feet and an initial spread of 1–3 feet, with longer trailing stems when left to grow freely. Allow additional space if it will climb or spread beyond a container. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun to shade in fertile, medium-moisture, well-drained soil. The plant tolerates a range of soils and some drought once established, though even moisture helps maintain strong foliage color. Protect it from cold, drying winds. ## Foliage and Form The mature leaf pattern combines a gray-green center with a gold margin. Heat can fade the gold toward butter yellow, and lower light can reduce its intensity while leaving the variegation visible. This cultivar retains the evergreen character of English ivy. ## Maintenance Pinch or trim trailing stems when they outgrow their container or groundcover area. Inspect regularly for leaf spots, aphids, scale insects, and vine weevils. Wear gloves when pruning, and keep plant material away from children and pets because ingestion may cause discomfort.
