Gnome Mix is an extra-dwarf globe amaranth grown for a compact display of small rounded flower heads in a mixed color range. Its low stature makes it useful along a bed edge or in a container where taller plants would hide the flowers.
## Growing conditions
Plant it in sun and provide well-drained soil. Gomphrena tolerates heat and dry spells once established, but steady moisture helps young plants fill out. Published mature-size figures for Gnome Mix differ: one nursery lists 10–12 inches tall, while another lists a shorter 6-inch plant and a 14-inch spread. A grower catalog also lists the Gnome series at 10–12 inches tall. These figures reflect different production and garden conditions; allow room for a compact mound rather than treating one measurement as universal. The [Stutzmans annual catalog](https://stutzmans.com/catalog/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/annuals.pdf) identifies Gnome Mix as a dwarf selection, and [North Carolina Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/gomphrena-globosa/common-name/globe-amaranth/) describes the Gnome series as extra dwarf.
## Garden use and flowers
Use it in small borders, edging, and mixed pots. Gomphrena's papery bracts hold their color well and also make useful dried flowers. The Gnome selections include pink, purple, and white flower colors, giving a mixed planting a varied finish.
## Maintenance
Water regularly during establishment and during extended dry weather. Remove spent plants after frost; as an annual, it does not need perennial division or routine pruning.
