About Bristol Fairy Baby's Breath

'Bristol Fairy' is a clump-forming perennial baby's breath with slender stems, narrow grey-green leaves, and large panicles of double white flowers in summer. Its tall, open flowering stems suit the back of a sunny border and provide long-lasting cut flowers. ## Siting and Soil Give this selection full sun and deep, light, sharply drained soil; it grows in chalk or loam and prefers alkaline to neutral conditions. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/97861/gypsophila-paniculata-bristol-fairy-d/details) lists a mature height of 1–1.5 m and spread of 0.5–1 m, so allow room for a substantial plant. Avoid winter wet. ## Flowering and Use The RHS describes pure white double flowers in summer. It is useful in cottage-style borders, gravel gardens, and cut-flower plantings. The RHS nursery profile notes that the long-lasting flowers are sought after for arrangements and recommends support before flowering. ## Maintenance Stake the stems before buds open where wind or the weight of flower panicles may cause leaning. After bloom, cut back to encourage a possible second flush. In spring, divide only congested plants and handle the fleshy roots carefully. See the [RHS growing and pruning guidance](https://www.rhsplants.co.uk/plants/_/gypsophila-paniculata-bristol-fairy/classid.2881/).
