About Hakonechloa 'Albo-striata'

Hakonechloa macra ‘Albostriata’, also sold as ‘Albo-striata’, is a slow-growing, deciduous grass with arching green leaves striped in creamy white. The Royal Horticultural Society describes a mound about 45 cm tall with late-summer pale green flower sprays; cultivar references list a compact spread of roughly 12–24 inches. ## Garden placement Use the cascading mound along a shaded border, path edge, woodland planting, or container. The striped leaves brighten partial shade and pair naturally with hostas and ferns. Autumn brings red-brown tones to the foliage, which can persist into winter. ## Growing conditions Plant in partial or full shade in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. It tolerates a range of soil textures, but standing water and prolonged dryness are poor fits. The RHS includes both ‘Albo-striata’ and ‘Albostriata’ among the names associated with this selection; its USDA zone range is listed as 5–9 by Perennials.com. ## Maintenance Allow the clump to establish before dividing; mature clumps can be divided in early spring, using generous divisions. In late winter, remove old flower stems and dead foliage at the base to make room for new growth.
