Hakonechloa macra ‘Albo Striata’ is the white-striped selection listed by the Royal Horticultural Society as a synonym of ‘Albostriata’. Its green blades carry creamy-white stripes, form a graceful mound, and can develop red-brown autumn tints. ## Landscape Use
Plant this grass along a shaded path, at the front of a border, or in a woodland bed where the striped foliage can brighten a green planting. It also suits containers and can soften the edge of a step or low wall.
## Growing Conditions
Give it partial or full shade and cool, moist, well-drained soil. The RHS lists several soil textures, while the nursery advises avoiding full sun; in warm summer areas, afternoon shade helps protect the leaves. Allow room for a mature clump about 16–20 inches tall. Published spread estimates vary: NVK lists 20–24 inches, while the RHS gives a broader maximum range, so plan for a compact mound rather than a fixed width.
## Seasonal Interest
Airy flowers appear in late summer to early fall, followed by foliage that may turn red or purple.
## Maintenance
In late winter or early spring, cut away old leaves before the new growth emerges. Divide the clump in spring when you need to propagate it. [RHS cultivation guidance](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/168840/hakonechloa-macra-albostriata/details)
