Create design onlineAbout Aureola Japanese Forest Grass
Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ is a compact, clump-forming grass with arching leaves striped bright yellow and green. The foliage can develop reddish tints in autumn and early winter, making this selection useful where a soft mound of color can brighten a shaded border. ## Landscape Use
Use ‘Aureola’ along a path, at the front of a border, under light shrubs, or in a container where its arching leaves can fall over the rim. Repeated clumps create a flowing edge without the look of a rigid row.
## Growing Conditions
Plant in partial shade or a cool site with moist, well-drained soil. The RHS notes that it can grow in sun or partial shade, while the foliage is more prone to burning in hot sun. Keep the soil evenly moist during dry spells and give the clump time to expand, as this cultivar grows slowly.
## Seasonal Interest
Its yellow-green leaves are the main feature. Small late-summer flower panicles are subtle; autumn foliage may show red or pink tones.
## Maintenance
Leave the foliage through winter, then cut back dead leaves and old stems at the base in late winter or early spring. Divide the clump in mid-spring when propagation is needed. [RHS growing guidance](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/91600/hakonechloa-macra-aureola/details)
