About Fubuki Japanese Forest Grass

Hakonechloa macra ‘Fubuki’ is a compact Japanese forest grass with green leaves striped in white. The low mound has a cascading habit, and exact-selection sources describe seasonal foliage color that can shift toward orange or pink in autumn. [Morton Arboretum](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/japanese-forest-grass/) [NVK Nurseries](https://www.nvknurseries.com/plant/Hakonechloa-macra-Fubuki-Briform) ## Landscape Use Place ‘Fubuki’ along a shaded path, at the front of a border, among rocks, or in a container where the arching foliage can spill over the rim. Its compact size makes it suitable for smaller garden spaces and repeated edging. ## Growing Conditions Choose partial to full shade and moist, well-drained soil. NVK advises that this cultivar dislikes full sun. Keep the root zone from drying during warm weather, while avoiding poorly drained ground. ## Seasonal Interest The striped foliage provides the main show through summer; fall color varies between orange and pink in the references. Small late-summer flower spikes are airy and secondary to the leaves. ## Maintenance Leave the clump in place through winter, then cut old foliage back in late winter or early spring before growth resumes. Divide in spring if you want to propagate or renew the planting. Published height estimates range from 8–12 inches at NVK to about 14 inches at the Morton Arboretum, so its display range is kept open at 8–14 inches.
