About Naomi Japanese Forest Grass

Naomi Japanese forest grass is a dwarf, clump-forming Hakonechloa macra with creamy yellow and green variegated leaves that develop red and purple tones as temperatures cool. Its arching foliage gives shaded paths and woodland plantings a low, flowing edge. ## Garden Use The cultivar was selected for its contrasting summer and fall foliage, with airy flower panicles rising above the mound in summer. The plant patent describes about 25 cm of foliage, about 35 cm in bloom, and a spread near 66 cm; it lists USDA Zones 5–9 and use as an edging or groundcover plant. See the [Naomi plant patent](https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP19897P2/en) for cultivar identity, size, and hardiness. ## Growing Conditions Give Naomi partial shade and humus-rich soil that stays moist while draining freely. The [Royal Horticultural Society profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/255000/hakonechloa-macra-naomi-v/details) describes its creamy-yellow variegation and red-purple autumn color, and notes it can grow in sun or partial shade. In hotter sites, afternoon shade helps protect the foliage; water during dry spells, especially while the clump is establishing. ## Maintenance Leave the colored leaves in place through the cool season, then cut the old foliage back near the base in late winter before new growth begins. Divide an established clump in spring if you want additional plants or need to renew its shape.
