Algerian ivy is an evergreen, woody vine that can climb with aerial roots or spread over the ground where it has no support. Its broad green leaves give year-round cover, while mature climbing stems may produce small flowers and dark fruit. It can reach about 30 feet when climbing. In regions where it escapes cultivation, especially California, avoid planting near natural areas and check local guidance before use. ## Growing Conditions Shade to part shade suits this species. It tolerates clay, loam, and sandy soils with good drainage, and the North Carolina Extension lists USDA zones 7b through 9b. Water needs depend on site and establishment; keep new plantings evenly moist while roots settle, then adjust to rainfall and soil drainage. ## Foliage and Form Juvenile leaves are broad and lobed; foliage on mature climbing shoots can become less lobed. The plant is closely related to English ivy, but has notably broad leaves and reddish stems. ## Maintenance Guide young stems onto their support and trim edges before they enter beds or natural areas.
