About Persian Ivy

Persian ivy ‘Sulphur Heart’ is an evergreen, self-clinging climber with large green leaves marked by yellow or chartreuse centers. It can also creep as a low groundcover, so its height and spread depend on whether it is allowed to climb. ([RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/362226/hedera-colchica-f-sulphuriocordata/details), [KPU Plant Database](https://plantdatabase.kpu.ca/PlantPrint/heco)) ## Landscape Use Train it on a sturdy wall or trellis for vertical coverage, or use it to cover ground where its stems can be kept within bounds. The RHS gives a mature climbing range of 4–8 m tall and 2.5–4 m wide; a horticulture database also records a much lower groundcover form with long trailing stems. Leave room for the selected use and avoid planting where it can spread into natural areas. ## Growing Conditions This ivy grows in full sun or partial shade and accepts chalk, clay, loam, and sandy soils. It does best in moist but well-drained soil, though it also tolerates well-drained conditions. The RHS lists acid, alkaline, and neutral pH. ## Foliage and Form Heart-shaped leaves are dark or mid-green with yellow to gold markings. Variegation may become more conspicuous as the plant matures. Provide a support for climbing; without one, stems can extend horizontally and root along the ground. ## Maintenance Check the edges of a groundcover planting regularly and shorten stems that move beyond the intended area. Prune climbing growth to keep it clear of windows, gutters, and neighboring plants.
