Helenium is a genus of annuals and herbaceous perennials in the aster family, native to the Americas. Plants sold as sneezeweed vary in height, flower color, and flowering time, but many carry daisy-like flowers in warm colors from summer into fall.
## Appearance and placement
The [North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/helenium/) describes the genus as clumping, with yellow, orange, or red flower rays around a raised center. It recommends Helenium for pollinator plantings, borders, cottage gardens, and naturalized areas. Because the genus includes many species and garden hybrids, mature size and hardiness depend on the particular plant.
## Growing conditions
Most garden heleniums perform best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. The [University of Wisconsin Extension guide](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/helenium-helenium-autumnale/) notes that taller types may need staking and that plants can lose lower foliage when they become too dry. Use the profile for the identified species or cultivar when choosing final spacing and winter protection.
## Maintenance
Water during dry periods and deadhead to encourage additional flowers. Support taller stems before they begin to flop, and cut back spent stems after flowering or before new spring growth. Divide crowded clumps when vigor declines.
