Sun roses are low-growing members of the genus Helianthemum, a group used for sunny, well-drained planting areas. Species and cultivars vary in mature size, foliage texture, flower color, and bloom timing, so choose a named selection when those details matter.
## Landscape Use
Sun roses suit rock gardens, the front of a sunny border, slopes, and low groundcover plantings. Flowers may be single or double and appear in several colors; individual blooms are short-lived, but successive buds can maintain a display for weeks. Foliage also varies among selections, from green to gray or silvery tones.
## Growing Conditions
Most garden sun roses do best in full sun and sharply drained soil. Gravelly, sandy, or rocky ground is useful, and a raised mound can help where native soil holds water. Water thoroughly after planting and during the first growing season; established plants generally need little summer irrigation in dry climates. Mature size, hardiness, and flower color depend on the species or cultivar.
## Maintenance
Shear faded flower stems lightly after the main bloom to tidy the plant and encourage fresh growth. Avoid persistently wet winter soil. Source: [UC Master Gardener Program of Sonoma County](https://ucanr.edu/site/uc-master-gardener-program-sonoma-county/helianthemum-sunrose).
