About Fire Dragon Sun Rose

Fire Dragon sun rose is a low, evergreen rock rose with narrow grey-green foliage and single orange-red flowers that are redder at the center. It forms a spreading mound for sunny, free-draining spaces. The Royal Horticultural Society lists the selection as Helianthemum ‘Fire Dragon’ and places its flowering in late spring and early summer. ## Site and planting Plant in full sun and well-drained soil; the RHS lists chalk, clay, loam, and sand as suitable soil types. Use it near a border edge, along a path, in a gravel planting, or in a rock garden, with room for the mound to spread. Water while it establishes, then let the soil dry between waterings; this cultivar is reported to tolerate drought once established. Evergreen foliage keeps the plant visible after the flowers fade, and a light trim can help maintain its compact outline. ## Maintenance After flowering, shear lightly, removing no more than about half of the growth. Avoid cutting hard into old woody stems. Keep winter drainage sharp, and give supplemental water during extended dry periods while the plant is becoming established.
