Lobster claw heliconia is a tropical, rhizomatous perennial with large banana-like leaves and pendulous flower stalks. The red bracts are tipped with yellow and green, giving the plant its familiar claw-like display; the University of Florida IFAS profile lists mature height at 5–6 feet and spread at 3–6 feet. [UF/IFAS](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/FP248) recommends it for warm USDA Zones 10B–11.
## Placement and care
Plant it in a sheltered tropical border or grow it in a large container that can be moved under cover in cold weather. Full sun or partial sun is suitable, and fertile, moist soil supports the strongest growth and flowering. The clumping habit and coarse leaves make it an effective specimen, while the durable bracts can also be cut for arrangements.
## Seasonal display
Flower stalks arch outward from the upright foliage and are especially visible where they have space to hang. Allow several feet around the clump; mature size varies with warmth, light, and growing conditions. In cooler climates, treat it as a conservatory plant rather than relying on outdoor winter survival.
## Maintenance
Water regularly during active growth and keep the soil moist without leaving roots waterlogged. Remove spent flower stems and damaged leaves at their base. Divide crowded rhizomes in warm weather, and monitor the bed edge because rhizomes can expand over time.
