About Viguiera Showy Goldeneye

Showy goldeneye is an upright, clump-forming western perennial with narrow leaves and small, bright yellow, sunflower-like heads at the ends of branching stems. Plants can approach 3⅓ feet tall and spread about 1–3 feet, with flowering reported from May into October in Arizona. ## Planting and landscape use This species grows in grasslands, open mountain areas, meadows, rocky slopes, woodland edges and roadsides. Give it sun or partial shade and room for its branching form. It suits informal borders and meadow-style mass plantings with other robust wildflowers. In the Intermountain West, established plants can be drought hardy, though they may benefit from supplemental water during midsummer. ## Seasonal interest Yellow flowers provide an extended display from late spring or early summer into fall; exact timing varies by location. The narrow foliage and branching stems keep the plant’s outline visible between flowers. The [University of Arizona Yavapai County plant guide](https://yavapaiplants.extension.arizona.edu/heliomeris-multiflora) documents its habitat, flower timing and morphology, while the [Utah Native Plant Society fact sheet](https://www.unps.org/plant%20data%20base/plant%20sheets/showygoldeneye.html) describes its garden use and established-plant water needs. ## Maintenance Remove spent flower heads to prolong flowering and reduce volunteer seedlings. Cut stems to the base after flowering is finished.
