About Alba Heliotrope

Heliotropium arborescens 'Alba' is a white-flowered heliotrope grown for fragrant clusters above a bushy mound of textured foliage. In warm climates it can persist as a perennial, while its long spring-to-fall flowering also makes it useful in sheltered containers and partly shaded beds. ([Annie's Annuals](https://www.anniesannuals.com/heliotropium-arborescens-alba.html), [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/heliotropium-arborescens/common-name/common-heliotrope/)) ## Garden use The selection is described at about 30 inches tall and wide, making it suitable near a path, outside a window, or in a spacious container. White flower clusters carry a strong vanilla-like fragrance; butterflies visit the blooms. The species is native to western South America and is commonly treated as a tender perennial in cooler climates. ## Growing conditions Provide rich, well-drained soil and regular moisture. Annie's Annuals reports good growth in part shade and USDA Zones 9–11; NC State notes that the species also grows in full sun when soil stays moist, with some afternoon shade appreciated in hot summer weather. ## Maintenance After frost danger has passed, lightly prune to shape the mound and remove dead stems. A spring compost dressing supports vigorous growth; protect the plant from cold where it is not reliably hardy.
