Create design onlineAbout Marine Heliotrope
Marine is a compact heliotrope selection with scented, deep violet-blue flower clusters and a bushy habit. The Royal Horticultural Society describes it as bedding grown, usually as an annual, and gives a mature height and spread range of 0.1–0.5 m. ## Garden Use
Use Marine near a path, seating area, or in a container where its fragrance can be enjoyed. Its compact scale suits the front of a sunny border and seasonal bedding; in colder climates it is best treated as a warm-season annual.
## Growing Conditions
Choose full sun or light partial shade and soil that holds some moisture but drains freely. The RHS lists loam and sand among suitable soil textures. Water moderately during active growth, keeping container compost from drying completely; give some afternoon relief in hot summer conditions. [North Carolina Extension’s garden heliotrope guide](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/heliotropium-arborescens/) describes full sun, moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil and notes that afternoon shade can help in hot climates.
## Maintenance
Pinch young shoots in spring to encourage a bushier shape. Shorten leggy stems in spring if needed, and remove spent flower clusters to keep the plant tidy. Heliotrope is tender to frost, so move containers to a bright sheltered place before cold weather or replace bedding plants the following season.
