Create design onlineAbout Helleborus NORTH STAR 'Ruby Heart'
‘Ruby Heart’ is a NORTH STAR™ hellebore with semi-double winter flowers freckled and dotted in ruby tones. Terra Nova lists a mature size of about 13 inches tall by 17 inches wide, blooms from January through March, and USDA Zones 4–9 ([cultivar profile](https://www.terranovanurseries.com/product/helleborus-north-star-ruby-heart/)).
## Landscape Use
Use this compact selection in a border or container where its early flowers can be enjoyed at close range. The breeder describes heavy flowering, evergreen foliage, and suitability for cutting. Plant in spring and allow the roots to establish before winter bloom; use a container with generous drainage and enough soil volume for the mature spread.
## Growing Conditions
Plant in fertile soil with organic matter and reliable drainage. Although the breeder lists full sun through full shade, hellebores usually perform best in partial shade; choose a place sheltered from harsh winter winds. Keep soil evenly moist while the plant establishes, then avoid prolonged wetness. See the breeder’s [growing guidance](https://www.terranovanurseries.com/product/helleborus-north-star-crystalline/).
## Maintenance
Leave the clump in place once established. In early spring, remove dead or disfigured leaves before fresh foliage appears. When flowers fade, cut their stems back to basal leaves; remove spent flowers before seed forms if you do not want seedlings. Hellebores can irritate skin and are toxic if eaten, so wear gloves when handling them.
