About Lenten Rose

Lenten rose is a clump-forming Helleborus orientalis with leathery dark-green leaves and nodding flowers that open from late winter into spring. Flower color varies across greenish-white, pink, and purple shades, and the species typically reaches about 1–1.5 feet tall and wide ([NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/helleborus-orientalis/), [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/101214/helleborus-orientalis-lam/details)). ## Landscape Use Use it in a shaded border, woodland garden, or large container for flowers when many perennials are dormant. The clumping foliage provides groundcover-like presence; leave room for a mature spread of roughly 12–18 inches. Flowers can attract early pollinators, and the plant is reported as deer and rabbit resistant. ## Growing Conditions Provide partial or full shade and moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. It tolerates clay, loam, or sandy soil when drainage is good and prefers neutral to alkaline conditions. Protect it from hot, direct winter sun and drying winds. Foliage can remain evergreen in mild climates but may die back in colder winters. ## Maintenance Remove old or winter-damaged foliage in early spring to expose new growth, then cut back spent flower stems after blooming. Divide only when needed and water divisions as they establish. Hellebore sap can irritate skin and all parts are toxic if eaten; wear gloves during cleanup.
