About Purple Daylily Mid-Summer

Hemerocallis ‘Bela Lugosi’ is a clump-forming daylily with semi-evergreen, strap-shaped foliage and branching summer scapes. Its deep-purple, six-inch flowers have a vivid lime-green throat, and mature scapes reach about 33 inches above an 18–24-inch spread ([American Daylily Society](https://daylilies.org/cultivar/bela-lugosi/), [Ward’s Nursery](https://wardsnursery.com/product/hemerocallis-bela-lugosi/)). ## Garden use The dark, sunfast flowers make a strong accent in sunny perennial borders, where the upright scapes rise above lower edging plants. Give the foliage room to form a dense clump and group several plants when a fuller summer display is wanted. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun for the best flowering, or provide light afternoon shade in hot locations. Use fertile soil that stays evenly moist but drains well; the plant can grow in clay, loam, sand, or chalk soils. Established clumps can be divided in spring or autumn ([RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/179832/hemerocallis-bela-lugosi/details)). ## Maintenance Remove individual spent flowers for a tidy appearance and cut the finished flower stems back after blooming. Clear dead foliage as needed, and divide the clump when it becomes crowded or flowering declines.
