About Chicago Apache Daylily

Hemerocallis 'Chicago Apache' is a named daylily with scarlet-red flowers and a green throat. The American Hemerocallis Society records a midseason bloom and dormant foliage, while the Chicago Botanic Garden notes that successive buds can keep the display going for two weeks or more. ## Landscape and season The bright flowers suit a sunny perennial border or a group planting where their red color can be seen across the garden. Individual flowers last one day, but buds open in sequence on several stems, extending the summer show. The registered bloom is about five inches across and the scapes rise about 27 inches. ## Growing conditions Plant in full sun for strong flowering; partial shade is also suitable. Use soil that drains reasonably well and water newly planted clumps during dry spells while they establish. The cultivar is a tetraploid selection, a useful identity detail when comparing it with other red daylilies. ## Maintenance Remove spent flower stems after the buds on them have finished. Cut away dead foliage as needed, and divide established clumps when they become crowded or flowering declines. The [American Hemerocallis Society cultivar record](https://daylilies.org/cultivar/chicago-apache/) documents its season, scape height, foliage type, and flower color; the [Chicago Botanic Garden profile](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/hemerocallis-chicago-apache-chicago-apache-daylily) describes its garden display and exposure.
