About Fire King Daylily

Hemerocallis 'Fire King' is a dormant daylily bred by John Benz and registered in 1991. Its brilliant orange, 5.5-inch flowers open at night on tall scapes, bringing a vivid late-season accent to perennial borders. ## Site and growing Choose a sunny site; this cultivar also tolerates partial shade. Red Butte Garden lists average water, a 30-inch height, a 21-inch spread, and June through August bloom. Daylilies grow in varied soils, including clay and sand, and benefit from fertile soil with reasonable drainage. See the [Fire King record from the American Daylily Society](https://daylilies.org/cultivar/fire-king/), [Red Butte Garden profile](https://redbuttegarden.org/plants/species/1310/?sort=garden_area), and [Walters Gardens daylily guide](https://www.waltersgardens.com/article.php?ID=240). ## Seasonal interest The single orange flowers have matching orange throats and measure about 5.5 inches across. The American Daylily Society records a midseason bloom and nocturnal opening habit; local timing can shift with climate. ## Maintenance Water newly planted daylilies regularly while they establish. Remove finished flower stems for a tidy clump, then clear dead foliage as it declines. The cultivar is dormant, so its foliage dies back for winter. [The American Daylily Society](https://daylilies.org/cultivar/fire-king/) records the cultivar’s foliage type and flower traits.
