Hemerocallis ‘Mary Todd’ is a tetraploid daylily selected for large golden-yellow flowers on upright scapes. The [American Daylily Society](https://daylilies.org/cultivar/mary-todd/) records 26-inch scapes and 6-inch flowers; [Heritage Perennials](https://www.perennials.com/plants/hemerocallis-mary-todd.html) describes ruffled golden-yellow blooms, an early-summer season and USDA Zones 2–9.
## In the Garden
Plant in full sun or partial shade in ordinary garden soil that drains well. This clump-forming perennial makes a bright accent in a border or a repeated mass planting, and its grassy foliage gives structure after the flowers fade. The mature plant is about two feet tall, with the spread estimates varying by source; leave space for the foliage clump and flower scapes rather than crowding it against neighboring plants.
## Seasonal Interest
The large, warm yellow flowers appear early in the daylily season, generally in early summer. Each bloom is short-lived, but buds open in sequence along the scape. The semi-evergreen foliage may remain green longer in mild climates; in colder areas, older leaves can be removed after they die back.
## Maintenance
Trim finished flower stalks after blooming and remove old foliage in late fall. Daylilies are easy to divide if a clump becomes too large, though Heritage Perennials notes that this selection can remain undivided for several years. Split clumps in fall or early spring and water new divisions as they establish.
