About Mighty Chestnut Daylily

Hemerocallis ‘Mighty Chestnut’ brings russet red-orange flowers, a deep burgundy eye, and a gold throat to a sunny border. The fragrant, ruffled blooms are about 5 to 5½ inches wide and arrive in late midsummer; Walters Gardens describes the foliage as dormant and the plant as hardy in USDA Zones 3–9. [Walters Gardens](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=HMMCH) ## Garden Use This upright clump works in a mixed perennial border, a sunny mass planting, or a large patio container where its unusual flower color can be seen at close range. Give it room for a mature spread of about 18–24 inches. Full sun encourages flowering, though light afternoon shade is also suitable. Use the russet blooms as a warm accent among grasses or cool-colored perennials. ## Growing Conditions Plant in average, well-drained soil. Water regularly while the clump establishes, then water deeply during prolonged dry spells; established daylilies cope with a range of garden soils. Walters Gardens lists full sun, part shade, and low to average water needs for this selection. ## Maintenance Remove spent flowers and cut each finished scape near the base for a tidy appearance. Divide a crowded clump in spring or fall, usually after several years, and remove dormant foliage when it has died back.
