Hemerocallis ‘Monterrey Jack’ opens broad, ruffled light-yellow flowers with a crisp raspberry-red eye and paler midribs. The flowers reach about 5½ inches across, and the cultivar blooms early in the daylily season, bringing color to borders as summer begins. [Walters Gardens](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=HMMOJ) lists a 24-inch height, an 18–24-inch spread, and USDA Zones 3–9.
## Garden Use
Use this vigorous clump in a sunny perennial border, along a slope, or in a group where the contrasting eye can be seen from a short distance. It also suits large containers. Full sun gives the best bloom, while part shade is tolerated. Its arching leaves make a low green mound below the upright flower scapes.
## Growing Conditions
Plant in average, moist but well-drained soil. Daylilies tolerate varied garden conditions, but steady moisture during active growth helps keep the foliage attractive. The [American Hemerocallis Society cultivar record](https://daylilies.org/cultivar/monterrey-jack/) documents its early bloom, 24-inch scapes, and cream-yellow flowers with a wine-red eye; Walters Gardens describes its strong growth.
## Maintenance
Remove individual spent blooms and cut a finished scape close to the ground. Divide the clump in spring or fall if its center becomes crowded, typically after several years. Clear away old foliage as it dies back in autumn.
