About Rajah Daylily

‘Rajah’ is a historic clumping daylily introduced by Stout in 1935. Its orange-red flowers have a darker eye and yellow throat, opening above narrow, light-green leaves in midsummer. ## Siting and season Plant in sun or light shade in ordinary garden soil that does not become excessively dry. The Polish Nurserymen Association lists a mature height of 20–50 cm and flowering in July and August, and describes the foliage as deciduous. Use it as a single accent or repeat it in a sunny perennial border, allowing the leafy clumps room to develop. Planting several clumps creates a more noticeable midsummer display and keeps the selection’s upright flower stems visible among lower perennials. ## Maintenance Water during extended dry spells, especially while new plantings establish. Remove faded flower stems as the display ends, then let the foliage grow until it yellows naturally. Divide crowded clumps in spring or fall to renew growth and make additional plants.
