About Salieri Daylily

Salieri is an early-season tetraploid daylily with single, purple-black flowers and a lemon-green throat. The American Daylily Society records 5¼-inch blooms on 26-inch scapes; a current [Gertens cultivar listing](https://www.gertens.com/salieri-daylily) describes very dark purple flowers and a mature height range of 25–36 inches. The nearly black petals make a strong contrast with the grassy green foliage and lighter neighboring plants. ## Garden Use Place Salieri near the front or middle of a perennial border, where its dark flowers can be appreciated up close. A clump typically needs about 12–24 inches of width; the flower scapes rise above the lower, arching leaves. Full sun or part sun suits the plant. ## Growing Conditions Plant in ordinary, well-drained garden soil. Daylilies tolerate a range of soil types, but steady moisture while establishing supports a fuller display. The [University of Minnesota Extension daylily guide](https://extension.umn.edu/garden-and-home/yard-and-garden/gardening-in-minnesota/daylilies) recommends at least six hours of sun for best flowering and moist, well-drained soil. ## Maintenance Remove faded flowers if desired and cut each finished scape near the base. Trim dead foliage in early spring. Divide an older clump only when it is crowded or flowers less reliably.
