Create design onlineAbout Purple Waffle Plant
Purple waffle plant is a low, spreading tropical perennial grown for its puckered leaves, which show metallic purple tones above and a deeper purple underside. Small white flowers may appear on short terminal spikes, but the textured foliage is its main garden feature.
### Site and seasonal interest
In warm climates, use it as a shaded groundcover; in cooler areas, grow it in a container that can be moved indoors before temperatures fall. The University of Hawai‘i’s Cooperative Extension recommends light or medium shade and moist soil, noting that strong sun fades the purple color and dry conditions can stress the plant. The North Carolina Extension profile describes the closely related ‘Exotica’ form as compact and spreading, with occasional pruning to keep it full.
### Garden use
The trailing stems suit hanging baskets, low walls, and the front of a sheltered planting. Pair the leaves with simple green foliage to emphasize their color and quilted texture. Keep the root zone evenly moist while allowing excess water to drain.
## Maintenance
Pinch stem tips when a denser, bushier shape is wanted, and trim untidy growth as needed. Inspect indoor plants for common houseplant pests and avoid leaving the pot in standing water.
