About Sweet Rocket Mix - Dame's Rocket

Hesperis matronalis 'Sweet Rocket Mix' is a biennial or short-lived perennial grown for loose, fragrant clusters in purple, lavender, and white. The supplier lists a 24–36 inch height, an 18–23 inch spread, partial sun, and moist, well-drained soil; the species can seed heavily, so check local restrictions before planting ([Swift Greenhouses](https://www.swiftgreenhouses.com/plant/Hesperis-Matronalis-Sweet-Rocket-Mix); [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hesperis-matronalis/common-name/garden-rocket/)). ## Garden Use The upright flower stems suit a back or middle border and can be cut for indoor arrangements. Its fragrance is especially noticeable in the evening. Plants tolerate full or partial sun and average, well-drained soil, while a little shade can suit warmer sites. ## Seasonal Cycle Seedlings form a low rosette in their first year, then send up flowering stems the following spring. Because this mix is sold for its flowers rather than a reliably permanent clump, allow seedlings only where they are wanted. Dame's rocket is considered weedy in parts of North America and may spread into natural areas. ## Maintenance Remove spent flower heads before seed ripens if you want to limit self-sowing. Distinguish its four-petaled flowers from garden phlox, which has five petals, and follow local weed guidance where the species is restricted.
