Create design onlineAbout Arizona Cypress
Arizona cypress is a conifer named Cupressus arizonica in the source. [Kew](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:72649-2) treats that name as a synonym of Hesperocyparis arizonica. This species record is separate from smooth Arizona cypress, H. glabra, and named selections such as Blue Ice; no cultivar identity is inferred from the broad common name. Choose local site and maintenance practices according to the identified tree and its fire-prone source status.
## Yavapai County — 2025 source
The [University of Arizona Yavapai County bulletin](https://extension.arizona.edu/sites/default/files/2025-03/FirewisePlants3-14-2025.pdf), page 3, lists Arizona Cypress with the botanical entry Cupressus arizonica and form T. It places this row in its fire-prone list. The bulletin says fire-prone plants can ignite readily and burn intensely, and should be removed or aggressively maintained if near a home, road or driveway. For native trees, page 3 calls for removing dead material, keeping limbs out of the lower 6–10 feet and clearing shrubs beneath the canopy. For other fire-prone native plants, it calls for isolated stands more than 30 feet from structures. Apply current local requirements and care suited to the plant. No plant is fireproof. This source classification is regional and must remain separate from ratings published elsewhere.
