About Toyon

Heteromeles arbutifolia, known as toyon, is a versatile evergreen shrub native to California. It typically reaches 6 to 30 feet with a rounded growth habit. Its leathery, dark green leaves feature sharply serrated margins, providing year-round density. In early summer, it produces clusters of small white flowers that transition into red, berry-like pomes by winter. Drought-tolerant and adaptable to most soils, it is ideal for erosion control, hedges, or as a wildlife-attracting specimen.
