Heuchera, commonly called coral bells, are compact, mound-forming perennials grown mainly for their colorful leaves. This black-and-silver foliage form describes colors found across the genus; Heuchera includes many cultivars, so leaf patterns, mature size, flowering, and hardiness vary by selection. [RHS genus guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/heuchera?type=0) and [RHS growing guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/heuchera/growing-guide) describe the range and its care.
## Foliage and placement
Heuchera foliage ranges from deep purple and black to pewter and silvery gray; some leaves are marbled or veined. Most grow well in partial or dappled shade. Darker-leaved selections can often take more sun, while paler foliage may scorch in strong summer sun. Use them in borders or containers, or group low mounds as ground cover.
## Growing conditions
Provide well-drained soil and avoid ground that stays permanently wet or very dry. Many Heuchera retain foliage through winter, though some lose leaves during cold weather and regrow in spring. Flower color and timing differ by cultivar.
## Maintenance
Water newly planted Heuchera regularly through the first growing season, then water established plants during long dry spells. Remove dead or damaged leaves and faded flower stems. Check in spring for crowns lifted by winter and reset them at the soil surface. Divide older, woody clumps every three to four years to maintain vigor.
