About Black Forest Cake™ Coral Bells

‘Black Forest Cake’ coral bells forms a compact mound of dark chocolate-brown foliage with upright stems of bright red to pink-red flowers. The contrast between the dark leaves and vivid blooms suits containers and the front of a mixed perennial bed. [Terra Nova’s cultivar profile](https://www.terranovanurseries.com/product/heuchera-black-forest-cake/) lists USDA zones 4–9, about 6 inches of foliage height, and 12 inches for both spread and flower height; the [patent description](https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP33532P2/en) records larger measurements for an eight-month-old, one-gallon specimen, so allow some variation with growing conditions. ## Garden use Use this selection where its dark foliage and red blooms can be seen up close, such as a container, path edge, or the front of a border. Its rounded habit provides a low foliage layer, while the flowering stems rise above it in late spring and summer. The breeder describes the cultivar as suitable for full sun or part shade. ## Growing conditions Give it well-drained, organic soil and keep water moving away from the crown. Water regularly while it establishes, then avoid keeping the root zone soggy. Plant with the crown at or slightly above the surrounding soil to reduce the risk of stem or crown rot. ## Maintenance In early spring, remove winter-damaged leaves and clear away old stems as new growth begins. Keep mulch loose around the plant rather than covering the crown.
