About Chocolate Ruffles™ Coral Bells

Chocolate Ruffles coral bells make a compact evergreen mound of heavily ruffled chocolate-brown leaves with burgundy undersides. Small purplish flowers rise on strong stems above the foliage. [Terra Nova lists zones 4–9, a 12-inch foliage height, 24-inch spread and 30-inch flower height](https://www.terranovanurseries.com/product/heuchera-chocolate-ruffles/); its entry also identifies the EU grant EU3954. ## Planting and Seasonal Display The dark, rippled leaves add lasting texture to borders and mixed containers, especially beside fine or pale foliage. Flowers typically appear in June and July, extending above the leaf mound; cut stems can add a light, airy accent indoors. Give the plant room to reach about two feet across. ## Growing Conditions Plant in part shade or sun where the soil remains evenly moist and drains well. A humus-rich bed supports steady growth, while heavy soil should be improved or raised to keep water from collecting around the crown. The breeder describes average garden water and recommends conditions that are not too wet once established. ## Maintenance In early spring, remove tattered leaves and old flower stems without cutting into the crown. Keep mulch light and pulled back from the crown. Water during prolonged dry spells, especially during the first growing season. [The breeder’s growing notes](https://www.terranovanurseries.com/product/heuchera-chocolate-ruffles/) recommend spring cleanup and caution against burying the crown.
