Heuchera, commonly called coral bells or alum root, is a genus of clump-forming perennials grown chiefly for foliage that ranges from green and silver to purple, bronze, and lime. Small flowers rise above low leafy mounds, while size, color, hardiness, and bloom timing vary widely among species and named cultivars.
## Landscape Use
Use coral bells along a border, in containers, or as low groundcover beneath taller perennials and shrubs. Their varied leaf shapes and colors add a lasting layer of texture, and the flower stems bring a lighter accent when present. Avoid applying one mature-size or hardiness range to the whole genus; choose those details from the plant’s exact species or cultivar. [The RHS genus guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/heuchera) describes the range of foliage and common garden uses.
## Growing Conditions
Partial or dappled shade suits many heucheras, while some dark-leaved selections tolerate more sun. Most prefer average soil that is neither persistently wet nor very dry; strong summer sun can scorch paler foliage. [Terra Nova’s growing guide](https://www.terranovanurseries.com/product/heuchera-apple-crisp/) gives additional guidance on drainage, moisture, and cultivar differences.
## Maintenance
In early spring, remove damaged or tired leaves and keep the crown at or just above soil level. Leave healthy foliage in place through winter where it remains attractive.
